The Turbans + Don Kipper at The Jazz Cafe

  • The Jazz Cafe London (map)

Following their sold-out album launch at Islington Assembly Hall in April, international legends The Turbans bring their unique vibe to Camden's iconic venue The Jazz Cafe for a late summer smash with long-time collaborators Woodburner, supported by the epic Don Kipper who sold out their own album launch at Wilton's in June.

THE TURBANS

International musical adventurers The Turbans bind together music from ‘manywhere’, igniting audiences with the bacchanalian spirit of the Eastern Mediterranean. Drawing on the rich cultural heritage of both the Levantine and Balkan regions, they create original music for the 21st century, inspired by ancient melodies.

Sonically huge and visually arresting, the interstellar live show embodies the skill, experience and passion of intrepid instrumental explorers from Turkey, Bulgaria, Israel, Iran, Spain, Greece and England, pooling their energy and creativity in a spirit of generosity and openness that is so needed in these troubled global times.

2 years in the making, mixed and mastered by legendary producer Jerry Boys (Ali Farka Toure, Everything But the Girl, The Beatles), their eponymous album was released on acclaimed US label Six Degrees Records in March 2018, when they featured live on BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio 4 and Jazz FM.

Opening the show will be Don Kipper, a multi award-winning 7-piece ensemble playing a wide range of traditional musical forms, reflecting the cultural diversity of North East London, from Turkish and Greek Folk Musics to Romani music and Klezmer.

DON KIPPER

Don Kipper are a multi award-winning 7-piece ensemble playing a wide range of traditional musical forms, reflecting the cultural diversity of North East London. From Turkish and Greek Folk Musics to Romani music and Klezmer. While we attempt to root ourselves deeply in the traditions that surround them, they also like to bring these musical cultures together in innovative, exciting, and unusual ways that mirror London’s vibrant, cosmopolitan energy. Equally happy taking an intimate audience on a musical journey through Europe as we are taking their feet on a frantic journey around the dancefloor, at home both on large outdoor stages playing to a crowd of ecstatic dancers, and in sweaty tents getting the throng jumping.

Since 2013, they have released two albums, been featured on BBC Introducing and the BBC World Service, played two European Tours, and won the titles of both the Moshe Beregovski Award for best Klezmer Newcomers and World Music Network’s Battle of the Bands.

Their new album 'Seven Sisters' is one that’ll grab you by your very soul and pull you halfway through London before it’s finished with you. It will be released on 22nd June through World Music Network's Riverboat Records.
